A LITTLE ITALY
With
miles and miles of dense forests, crystal waters, sandy beaches and
charming towns, it is no wonder that southern Italy’s Basilicata region
is fast becoming the next Amalfi.
Stay
Transformed from an ancient 18th century convent, the Locanda delle Donne Monache
in Maratea is a boutique hotel with breathtaking views of the
Tyrrhenian Sea. A rooftop pool is a lazy alternative to beach
excursions while the hotel restaurant serves up some of the best
Lucanian specialties in the region. From $185 with breakfast. www.locandamonache.com
Do
The
waters at Cala degli Infeschi are exquisitely blue. This pirate’s cove
can be reached by foot, although we suggest the short boat ride from
Velia beach along the coast.
Shop
It’s
impossible to step into the Farmacia dei Sani without sampling the
sun-dried figs and spicy sausages. Flavored olive oil, grappa and sweet
chestnuts in honey were just some of the edible souvenirs we brought
home. Via Cavour 10, Maratea.
Eat
Nestled
in the historic centre, Taverna Rovita serves up local seafood and
traditional Lucanian fare such as stuffed peppers, bird game, mountain
cheeses and local salami. Don’t miss the cassata Lucana for dessert.
After dinner take a stroll through the sleepy town of Maratea where
pastel coloured streets are lined with wine bars, cafés, salumerias,
and gelato shops. Via Rovita 13, Maratea.
