JANUARY 12TH, 2009

in the bag

Take a break from all the bleak American dramas with a cinematic escape to Provençe.

A dreamy pastoral landscape and dreamier male lead delicately woo in the quiet French film, The Grocer’s Son. The coming-of-age story follows a wayward young man who returns to his rural hometown to help with the family grocery business after his father falls ill. While hoping to win the heart of a young divorcee, he encounters a host of colourful locals, and ultimately himself.

Playing now at the Vancity Theatre—undoubtedly the best cinema in the town, with the plushest theatre seats you’ll ever sit in—it’s a fitting date to make with the cultured gent you met in the foreign foods aisle, non?

The Grocer’s Son runs until January 15 at the Vancity Theatre, 1181 Seymour St., 604-683-3456, www.vifc.org
