Go Big

Go Big
Bigger than all of the other Hawaiian islands combined and with 11 different climate zones, Hawaii's Big Island is often referred to as the state's largest playground. Here are our picks for the Kona Coast, on the island's west side.
stay
A Rockefeller creation, Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel is a large-scale resort but with uber-friendly staff (everyone knows your name). One of the island's best beaches, Hapuna is just steps away and when the winds reach their highs—locals call the neighbouring Waikola “Waikablowa”—take shelter with a Chi Chi at the hotel's pool. Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, 62-100 Kauna'oa Dr., Kohala Coast, Hawaii, 1-888-977-4623, from $295/night, www.princeresortshawaii.com
eat
It's nearly impossible to find less-than-delectable sushi anywhere on the Island but Sushi Rock in the historic town of Hawi is our favourite. A new-wave take on sushi means you'll find rolls with apples, walnuts and Parmesan cheese but the menu also caters to vegetarians and guests who want their meal a little less raw. Reservations recommended, Sushi Rock, 55-3435 Akoni Pule Hwy, Hawi, 808-889-5900.
shop
Break from beach time at the Queens' MarketPlace and the Kings' Shops at Waikoloa, perfect for a little outdoor perusing or purchasing. Here, you'll find all the big names like Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton, Coach and a number of locally owned boutiques.
do
If you're missing the snow, head up to Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano and the tallest sea mountain in the world, often covered with the white stuff. It's cold and you'll need a few layers over the bikini but the sunset and the stargazing is worth the trip. If you're more of a water baby, do a night snorkel with the manta rays ($79.95) but beware the massive mantas get up close and personal.
