Down the Rabbit Hole

Well, shrink me silly and rename me Alice! This fantasy playroom built by Minnesota general contractor Andy Schrader caught our eye this week. If I were a kid I'd definitely want to follow this white rabbit wherever he's in a rush to get to!

Found in a luxurious, 8,600 square foot home in Edina, Minn., this secret playroom is where anyone — kids and adults alike — would want to find refuge in every day.
Custom painted by Luna Murals, the White Rabbit greets you at the 4'6" high entry, making you want to follow him down a tunnel that literally gets smaller as you walk through. The height at the end of the tunnel is 4'. As Paul Hughes of Schrader Companies says, "It was quite a feat for the sheet rockers to make this look right."

"Don't mind me, I'm late ... I'm late!"

Here's a view of the inviting entryway found in the side of a guest room. The entrance is beneath a stairwell landing below a sunken sunroom. "When Andy designed the home, we had this extra space and we suggested to the client this concept for the room to make the home family-friendly," Hughes says. If the playroom had not been designed, it would have become storage space underneath the stairs.

The tunnel, aka "the rabbit hole," leads to a delightful discovery: a secret Alice-in-Wonderland playroom. Furniture proportionally oversized for kids and a giant teapot are perfect for a tea party for big little people. Low ceilings add to the effect in this 8'x10' room, and painted quotes and beautiful murals inspire fun playtimes.
