WaterDream: the Art of Bathroom Design

If you’re looking to get some inspiration for bathrooms, check out the WaterDream exhibit at the Museum of Design in Atlanta. The three-part exhibit has something for everyone, taking you through a visual timeline of innovations in bathroom design over the centuries, and highlighting faucets and fixtures from around the world. The exhibit features the bathroom visions of Phillippe Starck, Jean-Marie Massaud, Patricia Urquiola and the Bouroullec brothers who were challenged to create conceptual bathrooms that celebrate the transformative qualities of water. The exhibit opened in late June and will be on display through September 17, 2011.

Less and More: The Design Ethos of Dieter Rams at SFMOMA

A new exhibition featuring more than 200 sketches, prototypes, and original products by influential industrial designer Dieter Rams opens Aug. 27. Known for his distinctly modernist approach and philosophy about the function of design, Rams produced iconic and contemporary designs that were all touched by his Ten Principles of Good Design, such as Apple computers. For more than 40 years, Rams was the lead designer for Braun, the German household appliance company, and he has also been a designer for Vitsœ, the German furniture company since 1959.

In the spirit of DIY, celebrate the role of making with the opening of the exhibition Power of Making which includes more than 100 exquisitely crafted objects. The works on display will be a cabinet of curiosities showing works by both amateurs and leading makers from around the world to present a snapshot of making in our time.
Items will include molded shoes by Marloes ten Bhömer, new Saville Row tailoring by Social Suicide, furniture such as a spun metal rotating chair by Thomas Heatherwick to individual handcrafted puppets from the 2009 film "Fantastic Mr. Fox," a suspended lamp, (shown above), and a six-necked guitar.

The Art of the Anatolian Kilim: Highlights from the McCoy Jones Collection at the de Young
San Francisco, CA
Sept. 10 marks the opening of a collection featuring Anatolian kilims given to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco by H. McCoy Jones and his wife, Caroline. The exhibition includes two dozen of the textile arts at the de Young museum. The Anatolian flat-woven kilims on view, dating from the 15th to the19th centuries, include a variety of design types and regional styles, as well as superb examples of artistic and visual prowess. The kilims in the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s permanent collection are considered the most important group of Anatolian kilims outside of Turkey.
