Lyonel Feininger: At the Edge of the World

If you’re a fan of Bauhaus and German Expressionism, catch the encompassing Lyonel Feininger exhibit featuring diverse aspects of his artworks: paintings, miniature wooden figures and buildings, photographs and essays focusing on his lesser known works, such as his comic strips. This retrospective exhibit of Feininger’s career will have you enamored by his romantic, crystalline paintings of architecture and seascapes, and since it's the first in his native country in more than 45 years, it's one you won't want to miss.
The exhibit opened in late June and travels next to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, January 20–May 13, 2012.
Catch Feininger's exhibit before it ends on Oct. 16, then attend a concert at Carnegie Hall on Oct. 21, featuring "Bauhaus Bach" premiering three of Feininger's fugues performed by the American Symphony Orchestra. The concert will explore the inspiration Bach exerted on German modernism in the first half of the 20th century. For ticket information, visit www.americansymphony.org.

Bertrand Goldberg: Architecture of Invention

If you're in the Windy City, visit the Bertrand Goldberg exhibition to see over 100 original drawings, photos and more providing a comprehensive retrospective of a recognized contributor to Chicago's architectural environment. Goldberg was an innovative architect known for his groundbreaking design for Marina City (1959-1967). This exhibit is allows you to see his career within a historical framework, extending from his experimental origins at the Bauhaus to his visionary plans for the postwar American city.
Reserve a spot for a hands-on workshop (Oct. 1-2) where you can create your very own sculptural models inspired by the Goldberg exhibit.
While at the Art Institute, you can check out Design Inspiration: 19th Century American Builders’ Manuals and Pattern Books through Nov. 1.
