Warm up your home with harvest colors, layered textures and art

As we leave summer behind my thoughts forge ahead to cool, crisp air and the appearance of colorful autumn leaves. I welcome the fall with open arms, along with mother nature's influences on our home's decor. Shades of red, orange, gold and green will make an appearance in my decorating scheme this year as my home reflects the changes going on outdoors.

This ideabook captures 8 of the season's best decorating ideas using items you may already own and offers suggestions on what to buy if you want to add a few new items to your repertoire.
Bring the outside in. Using the season's harvest in your decor — a bowl of bright red pomegranates, berries or an arrangement of spare branches — signals that fall is here.
Pillow and throws. The simple addition of accent pillows and two throws in an earthy color palette turns up the heat in this otherwise neutral living room.
Add warmth underfoot. After a long hot summer, it's time to roll out the carpets once again in preparation for cooler temperatures. In addition to color, textures also play a part in setting the tone for fall decorating. This plush rug of navy, taupe and creme guarantees warmth underfoot and sets the mood for cozy relaxation.
Insulate while you decorate. Insulate your bare windows and doors with heavy drapery. This not only conserves energy, but also adds visual weight to an airy space.
Dress your room In layers. Depending upon your locale, fall may be a good time to add another layer to your bedding ensemble. To keep the design from appearing too heavy, fold the blanket neatly at the foot of the bed when not in use.

Use art to set the tone. Cooler temperatures welcome artwork with warm colors. This piece, consisting of a beautiful melange of deep golden hues combined with wood-toned furniture, increased the temperature in an otherwise cool dining space.
Add a touch of velvet. At $349, this velvet tufted headboard is a budget-friendly option for a seasonal change in your bedroom. Try pairing mustard with rich, cranberry-hued accents for a warm boudoir primed for cuddling.
Use common scents. Fall calls for a full-bodied home fragrance like this candle from Nest Fragrances. Its clean smell with a hint of spice sets the atmosphere just the same as your favorite wool blanket.
