DIY: Personalize Your Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. This year, why not add your personal touch to your gifts, cards and decor? Whether you’re looking for quick gifts for your kids to give to classmates (or for you to give to your friends at a ‘Galentine’s’ get-together) or you simply want to add a bit of Valentine’s flair to your decor, all you need is a roll of kraft paper and a few other supplies. These ideas are easy to make and easy on the budget.
Supplies:
- Assorted treats or flowers
- Kraft paper
- Tape
- Markers, paint pens or bristle brush and paint (acrylic or tempera)
- Scissors
- Clear treat bags (preferably cone-shaped)
- String or ribbon
- Kraft paper envelopes and cards
- Construction paper (optional)
Kraft Paper Cone Treat Bags
This is a quick way to create personalized candy or flower holders with kraft paper and markers or paint. Start by scouting the aisles for your treats or look in your pantry for items like candy, mints or nuts — or collect flowers for a different option.

Roll out your kraft paper on a flat surface and tape down the corners. Draw circles 8 to 12 inches in diameter on the paper as close together as possible with a marker, paint pen or bristle brush and paint. It’s best to draw the circles with a bristle brush and your chosen paint color if you’re using acrylic or tempera paint.
Begin drawing or painting your designs. Look for pattern inspiration in your favorite textiles or the holiday’s icons, such as cupid arrows, roses, hearts or X’s and O’s.
Note: One circle will make two treat cones, so six circles equal 12 cones.

Once the paint is dry, cut out the circles. Fold each circle in half and cut down the middle so you have two semicircles. Wrap one corner of a semicircle toward the inside of the paper and watch your cone begin to take shape.
It’s time to fill your treat bags! You can find clear cone or regular treat bags at your local market or hobby store.
Fill a bag with candy, tie it with string or ribbon and perhaps a gift tag (see how to make your own, below), and set it inside a kraft paper cone; repeat as needed. If you’re traveling with your treat cones, slip a piece of double-sided tape to the bottom of the cone to help secure the treat bag to the cone.
Non-candy option: Fill your cones with flowers to make party favors for your guests.
Since kraft paper and water don’t mix, hand the flowers to guests as they’re heading home (or fill the cones with petals instead).

Kraft paper can also come to the rescue when you need a quick-to-make table runner. Personalize it with simple X’s and O’s for a bright and cheery graphic look. You can sprinkle candies along the runner.
