A Child’s Magical Fairy-Tale Bedroom
Who lives here: A 2-year-old girl
Location: Redwood City, California
Size: 224 square feet (20.9 square meters)
Designer: Gita Jacobson of In the Deets
To create a functional and kid-proof room, Jacobson minimized the heights of furniture pieces, along with sharp edges and hard surfaces. The “house” bed, which she found through Latvian furniture vendor Sweet Home from wood, is whimsical and fun, as well as practical for a growing toddler.
“I wanted this to be her little house in her little land,” Jacobson says. “I came across this bed frame, and not only was it extremely easy and safe for her to get in and out of bed, but it had the shape of a house.” The bed doubles as a place to play or cuddle up with a storybook.
A dark blue accent wall was embellished with moon and star decals, a nod to a starry night sky like you’d see in a magical storybook land. “And the twinkly lights were an homage to fireflies and twinkly stars,” Jacobson says. “I wanted her to feel like she was sleeping under the stars.”
Other decorative accents include navy blue velvet drapes that tie into the soothing accent wall, a plush reading chair, a shaggy pink pouf and a quirky beaded floor lamp. A small book and toy caddy allows easy access to playthings and is minimalist compared with the chunky toy chest.
