The homeowners added photos from Houzz to an ideabook they shared with Campana to help communicate the style they wanted. Among the special features in the room is a custom-designed floor-to-ceiling wood headboard with a grain stain and gray chenille upholstery.

Before: The previous master bedroom featured wall-to-wall carpet, a stacked-tray ceiling and wall panels painted to look like clouds in a blue sky.
After: Campana enlarged some of the windows to allow more natural light in and to make room for built-in benches below. The floors are now covered in stained oak and the walls are painted in Benjamin Moore’s Cliffside Gray.
Campana also modified the stacked-tray ceiling to complement the clean lines found elsewhere in the updated design. “I was looking up at the ceiling in the middle of the process and asked our contractor if we could square it up to make it feel more open and also feel like an enhancement for the room,” she says.

2. Wow-Worthy Wallpaper
The guest bedroom in this English country house received a dramatic transformation from designer Karen Knox of Making Spaces. The designer says the key to the makeover was selecting a bold, floral-motif wallpaper that was certain to make a big impression. “We needed a large-scale wallpaper because there wasn’t going to be a lot of stuff in there,” Knox says.

Before: The previously cream-toned bedroom included red curtains and a small bed stationed in front of the bay window, perpendicular to the fireplace.
After: The bed is now located directly across from the fireplace, allowing for a seating area in front of the window that receives great natural light.
The designer selected a sleek four-poster bed with a thin black frame to pick up the ebony-stained floors and black-painted trim. “We were going to go for an upholstered headboard,” Knox says, “but when we found the wallpaper there was no point in having a big, solid piece of furniture in front of it.”

3. From Peachy to Beachy
The owners of this vacation house in Figure Eight Island, North Carolina, reached out to designer Lindsey Cheek of Gathered to transform their guest bedroom into a light, breezy space with a casual beach vibe.
Before: The former bedroom included natural wood trim around the windows, a pair of twin beds and peach-colored walls.
The owners of this vacation house in Figure Eight Island, North Carolina, reached out to designer Lindsey Cheek of Gathered to transform their guest bedroom into a light, breezy space with a casual beach vibe.

After: To create the breezy feel the homeowners wanted, Cheek covered the walls in Ocean Air, a light blue from Benjamin Moore. A new queen bed with an upholstered headboard now sits beneath an aqua blue glass chandelier that references the color of the nearby ocean. To complete the casual beach vibe, the designer added a pair of banana leaf chairs in front of the windows. “It’s a nice gesture to your guests to have a separate seating area in the room that’s not the bed,” Cheek says.
4. Classic Good Looks
The owners of this master bedroom in San Francisco reached out to designer Darcy Tsung to create a new space that felt lighter and brighter and better reflected their home’s classic architecture.

After: The bedroom is in a 1920s Mediterranean-style house with well-preserved exterior details. To give the bedroom some of that classic character, Tsung added picture molding to all of its walls. The molding and the ceiling are painted in Super White, and the walls are painted in Gray Lake, both by Benjamin Moore.
The bedroom features a mix of high and low furnishings. “The upholstered bed probably cost less than the custom bedding,” Tsung says. One splurge is the custom wool area rug featuring a Greek key pattern. Antique side tables replaced the previous dark wood nightstands.

5. From Bright Blue to Batman Cool
Wanting to create the ultimate boys bedroom for their two sons, aged 4 and 6, these homeowners in Huntington Beach, California, reached out to Louisa Lam, senior lead designer at 27 Diamonds Interior Design, to add some superhero style.
Before: The previous bedroom was designed for a teenage girl and included bright blue walls and a queen bed.

After: Since the boys love superheroes, their parents and Lam decided to give the bedroom a Batcave look. “I always advise that we start with a neutral base when creating a themed room,” Lam says. In this case, the walls are covered in Functional Gray and the ceiling is in Gauntlet Gray, both from Sherwin-Williams.
A bevy of Batman-themed accessories, including throw pillows, bedding, toys and a custom-painted Gotham City skyline on the bed wall, complete the action-packed look.
